Lurie Children’s Hospital halts gender-affirming surgeries following executive order

Lurie Children’s Hospital has announced a temporary pause on gender-affirming surgeries for patients under age 19 following an executive order from President Donald Trump targeting gender care.

In a statement released to the public on Monday, the hospital cited the need to assess the impact of Trump’s directive, which calls for federal agencies to ensure that hospitals receiving government funding “end the chemical and surgical mutilation of children.”

The language used in the order—describing gender-affirming care as “maiming,” “sterilizing,” and “mutilation”—stands in stark contrast to the medical consensus supporting such treatments.

“We are reviewing the recent Executive Orders addressing gender care and assessing any potential impact to the clinical services we offer,” Lurie Children’s said in its statement. “Our team will continue to advocate for access to medically necessary care, grounded in science and compassion for the patient-families we are so privileged to serve.”

While the hospital has halted surgeries, it emphasized that other forms of gender-affirming care, including hormone treatments and mental health support, remain available. Officials said they will continue to monitor the evolving situation as they determine next steps.

The hospital has not indicated how long the pause will last.
