X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, faced several waves of outages on Monday, March 10, according to reports from The New York Times. Users began experiencing problems before 6 a.m. Eastern time, with services briefly resuming before more issues arose around 10 a.m.
The New York Times reported that by this time, Downdetector, which tracks website problems, had recorded 41,000 outage reports. A third spike emerged shortly after 11 a.m., leaving the site inaccessible for many users. Data collected by The New York Times showed that more than half of these reports came from app users rather than website visitors.
The problems appeared quite persistent throughout the morning, with NBC New York noting this was unusual even for a platform that occasionally experiences traffic hiccups. After the initial 6 a.m. disruption when approximately 23,000 U.S. users reported issues to Downdetector.com, a second major outage struck around 10 a.m. when significantly more users were attempting to access the service, according to NBC New York's coverage.
The site briefly recovered about 45 minutes later before going down again. Notably, NBC New York reported that during these interruptions, there was no immediate statement from X explaining what caused these intermittent problems throughout Monday morning.
Late Monday morning, platform owner Elon Musk claimed the outages resulted from a "massive cyberattack, "Yahoo News reports. "There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X," Musk stated, explaining that while they face attacks daily, this particular incident "was done with a lot of resources." The X chairman suggested the involvement of "either a large, coordinated group and/or a country," according to Yahoo News. Musk promised his team was working to trace the attack's origin.
While many users remained unable to post or view content during these outages, Yahoo News noted the app had resumed functioning for some by 10:45 a.m. ET. The disruption created an unusual situation where users couldn't use X to complain about outages as they typically do when other platforms experience downtime. Adding to Musk's challenges, Yahoo News reported Tesla, his electric car company, saw its share price drop 8% in early trading Monday, extending a month-long 31% decline and continuing a difficult year for the billionaire's business interests.
