Hundreds of people raced up the steps of the Willis Tower on Sunday during the 15th annual Skyrise Chicago event. Over 1,700 participants climbed up to Skydeck Chicago’s observation deck on the 103rd floor, ascending more than 2,109 stairs in the world’s largest stair-climbing event.
SkyRise Chicago is equal parts a physical challenge and a fundraising event. The event partnered with the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, a nonprofit organization specializing in physical rehabilitation. Proceeds from this year’s event benefited the lab and its mission of providing rehabilitative services for those suffering from complex injuries.
“SkyRise Chicago is a powerful demonstration of ability where thousands of people celebrate as a community and accomplish new milestones,” said Laura Ferrio, senior vice president and chief operating officer at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. “We are so thankful to again host this event at the Willis Tower, which serves as a perfect backdrop on this inspiring, emotional day.”
Among this year’s participants was Chicago Police Department Sgt. Mike Dineen, who, in 2009, fell and sustained a traumatic brain injury. Dineen received treatment from the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, allowing him to fully recover and compete annually in the Skyrise stair-climb event.
This year’s event coincided with the 50th anniversary of the Willis Tower. Upon completing the climb, participants relished in breathtaking views from the Skydeck and the “Ledge” observation platforms.
