Iran’s President and Foreign Minister die in helicopter crash

Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian have been found dead following a catastrophic helicopter crash in the country’s East Azerbaijan province, according to the Associated Press (AP).

The crash reportedly occurred late Monday evening, with Iranian media outlets giving no immediate cause for the crash, according to the AP.

Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber has been appointed acting President by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, according to the AP. Pakistan and Lebanon have declared mourning periods in the wake of the tragedy, while condolences have poured in from leaders in Turkey, Egypt, and Russia, according to the AP.
