Hundreds of fans are commemorating the tragic passing of Liam Payne, the former One Direction member who died last week. Payne, aged 31, fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires on Wednesday, October 16. According to ABC7 Chicago, memorials have emerged at the Shakespeare Monument in Chicago's Lincoln Park (2045 North Lincoln Park West) and in other cities such as London and New York.

Fans have gathered to honor Payne by leaving photos, flowers, and heartfelt messages at various memorial sites. A vigil is planned at the Chicago monument, where grieving admirers are expected to gather this evening, reports ABC7 Chicago. A fan shared with ABC7 that Payne "brought people together in life and he continues to do so." Memorials are also reported in Dallas and Detroit, underscoring Payne's wide-reaching impact.

Autopsy report: cause of death

According to NBC Chicago, an autopsy report from the Argentina National Prosecutor’s Office revealed Payne died of "polytrauma" involving severe internal and external injuries. The term polytrauma refers to multiple traumatic injuries affecting different organs, often resulting from accidents or falls. His injuries included cranioencephalic trauma which contributed directly to his death.

Authorities noted that Payne had no defensive injuries, suggesting he didn't attempt self-protection during the fall, as reported by NBC Chicago. Substances were discovered in his room indicating potential drug and alcohol use prior to the incident, according to officials. Payne had been publicly open about his history with addiction before his passing.

While forensic evidence suggests Payne was alone during the tragic fall, an investigation is underway to ascertain any possible involvement of third parties. The prosecutor's office continues to delve into the circumstances that led to Payne's untimely demise, including interviews with hotel staff and individuals who were with Payne before his death.
