The U.S. Secret Service has released the street closure plan for the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Chicago from August 19-22.
The plan outlines extensive vehicle and pedestrian restrictions around United Center and McCormick Place for the duration of the convention.
According to a statement from the Mayor’s office, temporary road closures, along with vehicle and pedestrian perimeters, will go into effect around McCormick Place on the evening of August 16.
The same restrictions will begin around the United Center the following night of August 17.
A vehicle screening perimeter will be enforced around United Center and McCormick Place. Cars, cyclists, and pedestrians will be permitted to enter the area after being screened by security.
The DNC in Chicago has been classified as a National Special Security Event by the Department of Homeland Security, allowing for abundant federal resources to be allocated towards the event and ensuring a robust security plan.
Gov. J.B. Pritzker released a statement thanking the Secret Service for its efforts to increase security measures ahead of the DNC.
“I am deeply grateful to the United States Secret Service and all of our law enforcement partners across Federal, state, and local government for their work to ensure the safety and security of the Democratic National Convention,” said Governor JB Pritzker.
“Their tireless efforts and coordination will ensure convention-goers and residents alike will experience this historic moment without fear for their safety and with minimal disruption to their day-to-day activities.”
