The Shedd Aquarium has opened “Wonder of Water,” an exhibit that brings the beauty and importance of aquatic ecosystems to life. Replacing the 53-year-old Caribbean Reef exhibit, the new attraction offers an engaging and immersive experience for visitors of all ages.
At the heart of “Wonder of Water” is a 13-foot freshwater tank that holds 28,110 gallons of water. This awe-inspiring centerpiece showcases a dynamic mix of species, featuring 5,000 fish and 50 varieties of lush plant life living together in a vibrant aquatic habitat. Additionally, there is another 28,110-gallon marine habitat on the other side featuring vibrant and colorful corals that live, grow and thrive in colonies with 1,500 bold and beautiful reef fishes.
“Water is the reason all of this biodiversity can happen on our planet. It’s the reason that we exist. It’s the reason these animals exist. And we want to be able to create a moment where people are in awe of that,” Sarah Aman, an exhibit designer at the aquarium, according to Block Club Chicago’s interview. “We should never underestimate the power of awe.”
The exhibit features interactive elements that encourage guests to explore the intricacies of aquatic environments. By creating opportunities for side-by-side discovery, “Wonder of Water” aims to foster a deeper understanding of the vital role freshwater and marine ecosystems play in sustaining life on Earth.
Visitors can expect an educational and visually captivating journey that sheds light on the importance of protecting these vital environments.
This new exhibit at Shedd Aquarium on Chicago’s Museum Campus is included with general admission tickets. Guests can reserve tickets online to experience the vibrant world of aquatic life firsthand.
With “Wonder of Water,” Shedd Aquarium redefines how institutions can inspire environmental stewardship while offering a family-friendly attraction that delights and educates.
