Protected bike lanes and other traffic control measures are coming to Belmont Avenue in Avondale after months of delay, as part of a city-led initiative to bolster safety along the busy throughway.
Chicago’s Department of Transportation (CDOT) plans to install curb-protected bike lanes between Western and Kimball Avenues as part of its Complete Streets campaign, which seeks to increase protections for cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers.
According to CDOT Representatives, the infrastructure overhaul will also include curb extensions, in-lane stops, and other safeguards around the Belmont Blue Line Station and adjacent corridor.
Developments in the project come after months of delays, spurred by Quarry worker strikes which hindered access to asphalt and other necessary materials.

The planned improvements will bring much-needed regulations to Belmont Avenue, a street with a notorious speeding problem and significant traffic congestion. With the added curb extensions and other features, CDOT aims to slow the speed of traffic.
Parking restrictions will be in place along Belmont Avenue throughout the construction, which is expected to be completed by August. Additional information is available through CDOT.

This is a much-needed project. Make it easier and safer for bicyclist, and reduce the speed of traffic, making the road safer for all: pedestrians, cyclists, senior citizens, and children..
