Finding the perfect gift can feel daunting, but Shirley Kienitz, co-owner of Chicago’s Wolfbait & B-girls gift store, believes the key lies in thoughtfulness and personalization. As the heart of a community-driven gift shop, Kienitz has nearly two decades of expertise helping customers navigate the art of meaningful gift-giving.

When it comes to choosing a memorable gift, Kienitz advises prioritizing personal connections. “A gift is memorable when it’s personal,” she explains. “Gifts referencing inside jokes or showing knowledge of the recipient’s guilty pleasures are always well-received.”

For those who seem to have everything, she suggests opting for consumables. “Soaps, lotions, spices, chocolates—these are great because they serve a purpose and don’t add clutter,” Kienitz notes.

Kienitz also emphasizes the value of spontaneity in gift selection. “When you see something that instantly makes you think of someone, buy it and save it for the right occasion. Especially in a shop like ours, where many items are one-of-a-kind.”

Wolfbait’s unique offerings cater to a variety of preferences and occasions. From Zodiac-themed clay earrings to curated cocktail kits, the store makes it easy to find gifts for any recipient. Popular combinations include lavender eye pillows paired with candles for moms or spices and bitters for dads.

Wolfbait & B-girls, established in 2006, showcases creations from over 300 local artisans. "We’re a treasure trove of apparel, accessories, art, and gifts," says Kienitz. "Our mission is to strengthen our maker community while educating customers on the environmental and economic benefits of supporting local businesses."

The presentation, Kienitz says, is just as important as the gift itself. “A wrapped package creates anticipation,” she explains. Wolfbait’s hand-stamped packaging, adorned with a “Made in Chicago” tag, adds an extra touch of charm.

On a budget? Kienitz suggests mixing old and new. “Pair a thrifted basket or vintage glassware with a new cocktail kit or spice selection. It's thoughtful and affordable.”

Ultimately, the joy of gift-giving at Wolfbait & B-girls lies in its community roots. “We love being the connection between artisan and patron,” says Kienitz. “It’s beautiful to see people find light in difficult times through meaningful gifts.”

Whether shopping for a birthday, holiday, or just because, following these tips can help make any gift truly unforgettable.
