The iconic Home Alone house has officially sold, closing for $5.5 million—well over its original asking price of $5.25 million. The famous Winnetka, Illinois property, immortalized in the 1990 holiday classic, drew widespread attention when it was listed in May 2024. The sale, which went under contract shortly after listing, captures the essence of nostalgia for fans of the beloved film.
According to People, the listing agents, Dawn McKenna and Katie Moor of Coldwell Banker Realty, were elated by the outpouring of interest in the home. “We’re thrilled with the way this home captured everyone’s attention and hearts due to its well-deserved place in cinematic history and the timeless holiday memories it evokes,” they shared in a statement to the magazine.
The five-bedroom, six-bathroom home has more than just cinematic significance. The stunning 9,126 square-foot property boasts a range of modern amenities, including a fully equipped gym, a state-of-the-art movie theater, an indoor sports court, and a three-car heated garage.
The house was the backdrop for the movie where 8-year-old Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, is mistakenly left home alone during the holidays. The property has certainly made an impact on Culkin as well, who admitted to having “half a mind to buy [the home], just for giggles” during a December 2024 screening of the film. Though Culkin didn't plan to move in, he entertained the idea of turning the house into a "movie fun house" for fans to reenact scenes from the film, according to People.
Before the house became a real estate treasure, it belonged to Tim and Trisha Johnson, who purchased it in 2012 for $1.585 million, reports Mansion Global.
While the exterior of the house is instantly recognizable, the interiors don’t look exactly as they did in the movie. The production used a nearby abandoned school to build a two-story soundstage, as the house’s rooms were too small for the film crew. After a renovation in 2018, the home now features a chef’s kitchen, two family rooms, a screened-in porch with a fireplace, and high ceilings that open up the living space.
The second floor includes a luxurious primary suite with a gas fireplace, a walk-in closet, and a marble bath, while the third floor was converted into a junior primary suite. The space offers practical features, too, such as two laundry rooms and a mudroom, perfect for a family like the McCallisters.
