Sometimes it is hard to repeat greatness. Usually, you’re lucky enough to capture the magic once, but to do it again, even for a third time, and make it even more special? That’s not so easy.
Producer/Director Mike White took it even one step further. His “White Lotus” season three episodes might have even passed the sometimes surreal greatness of the first two seasons.
This one was filmed in Thailand, and the beauty and magnificence of this country is bountifully displayed throughout. From the opening scenes depicting the stillness of nature and the animals inhabiting Thai island, to the vibrant nightlife, Thailand comes off as a “must see” place to visit. The bureau of tourism in Thailand might want to send a huge thank-you note to the producers and filmmakers of “The White Lotus.”
All the ingredients that “White Lotus” fans have enjoyed in the past are back in full regalia. Suspense, drama, humor, sex, and unique, interesting human interaction are all blended together and all done with the show’s typical overtones of darkness and uneasiness.
It is one of those television experiences that makes “uncomfortable” enjoyable.
From three female friends who haven’t seen each other in ages and need to get through some things to come out on the other end, to a wealthy family with a host of problems and some weird sexual overtones; from a man with a one-track mind searching for the guy he thinks killed his father and ruined his childhood life, the story lines are well developed and keep you guessing which direction they may head. There’s even an ill-fated reconnection of a woman to a man who she knows killed his wife on a previous trip (and in fact did so in season two), as producer White keeps a little connection going from season to season among the characters.
All that and more, including my personal favorite of a growing infatuation between a kind and gentle security guard and a female hotel employee that is both “meet cute” and frustratingly evasive at the same time.
We will not reveal endings here, as some reading may have not watched yet. But suffice it to say it wraps up in the best of ways, and leaves you satisfied and wanting more–and really, that is about the best compliment any TV show or movie can get.
Season three lasts eight episodes, and here’s a warning in advance: The last episode is nearly two hours long, so be sure and hunker down with plenty of “don’t interrupt me” time to fully engage.
It is good to the last drop. Satisfaction guaranteed. And season four? We have been assured there will be one, and you can be equally assured that I shall be watching!
