Brookfield Zoo is set to debut its Tropical Forests exhibit in the spring, offering a vibrant journey through lush landscapes and exotic wildlife. This new attraction will immerse visitors in the sights and sounds of the tropics while highlighting the importance of conservation. It is an adventure for nature lovers and families, showcasing the wonders of our planet's most diverse habitats.

As part of phase one of the Next Century Plan announced in 2020, the Tropical Forests exhibit, with the gorilla habitat as its centerpiece, is set to open this spring. The new habitat will imitate a tropical rainforest, with adaptations for Chicago's chilly climate.

"In adapting the plant choices for the Tropical Forests exhibit to Chicago's weather, Brookfield Zoo is using a combination of innovative techniques and carefully selected plant species. While many of the plants in the exhibit will be tropical, the zoo is incorporating climate-controlled environments, such as greenhouses and indoor spaces, to replicate the warmth and humidity of tropical regions. Hardier plant species that can tolerate the seasonal fluctuations in Chicago's weather will also be integrated into the outdoor areas. This approach ensures that the exhibit maintains its lush, vibrant appearance year-round, while also being mindful of the challenges posed by the city's cold winters," stated Michael J. Adkesson, president and CEO of Brookfield Zoo Chicago.

Other notable habitat features include flowing water, climbing structures, tropical grasses and vines. These elements will offer the gorillas plenty of enrichment and opportunities for socialization, Adkesson said. Automated feeders placed throughout the "forest" will allow the primates to forage for food more naturally.

Adkesson added that the project also includes the Gorilla Conservation Center, designed to provide a natural, enriched environment that promotes conservation awareness. It will feature viewing areas where visitors can observe the gorillas as they roam freely in their outdoor habitat. Additionally, the center will offer a rooftop terrace for hosting private events.

According to Adkesson, the area is designed to inspire visitors to engage in conservation efforts and raise awareness about gorillas' challenges in the wild. Through this immersive experience, the zoo aims to educate future generations. Along with promoting conservation, the design of the gorilla habitat ensures the safety and well-being of both the animals and zoo visitors.

Creating a secure, stress-free environment that mirrors the gorillas' natural habitat was challenging, the zoo president and CEO added.  Mesh canopies covering the entire enclosure will be suspended by long cables anchored to steel columns designed to look like trees. These canopies are durable enough to withstand Chicago's unpredictable weather, he added.

The $66 million project promises an enriching experience supporting gorilla well-being while inspiring visitors to advocate for wildlife conservation. With its innovative design and educational approach, the zoo is helping shape a future where these majestic animals can thrive.
