Top regions for fall foliage

Illinois is home to several prime locations for experiencing autumn's beauty. Northern Illinois, with its scenic parks and lush forests, is a favored destination. Starved Rock State Park is 100 miles from Chicago, making it an ideal road trip destination for Chicagoans; however residents don’t necessarily need to leave the city to see fall foliage with sites such as Millennium Park and Lakeshore East Park.

Southern Illinois is equally captivating in the fall. The Great River Road offers picturesque views along the Mississippi River while the Shawnee National Forest offers a diverse landscape of hills, lakes, and ancient rock formations. Visitors are encouraged to explore the Garden of the Gods for a truly unique experience.

Central Illinois also offers beautiful fall foliage from its various farms, orchards, and pumpkin patches.

“State parks are wonderful places to experience autumn colors in Illinois,” said Natalie Phelps Finnie, director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, in a press release. “Visitors can enjoy the fall foliage while hiking in a forest, taking in vistas along the river bluffs, fishing on a lake, or bicycling along one of the state’s many bike trails. The fall colors guide is an excellent resource for crafting the perfect autumn adventure in Illinois.”
