This year's Christkindlmarket continues a beloved tradition rooted in German culture. The event was first introduced to Chicago in 1996, inspired by the centuries-old Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg, Germany, which dates back to 1545. Chicago’s version has become one of the most popular holiday markets in the United States, known for its authentic German food, hand-crafted ornaments, festive atmosphere, and rich cultural heritage.
This year's Christkindlmarket offers festive fun and some exciting new experiences at two key Chicagoland locations:
In downtown Chicago at Daley Plaza, the market runs from November 17 to December 24. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. A new feature this year is the Culture & Cheer Tours, available Friday through Sunday from 10:15 to 11 a.m. These tours offer behind-the-scenes insights, a goodie bag, market history and cultural highlights, a German language lesson and vouchers for a mug and hot chocolate.
In Aurora at RiverEdge Park, the market is open from November 17 to December 24. Hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. This location debuts exciting additions, including the Nutcracker in Lederhosen Scavenger Hunt and Christkind’s Workshop, a photo-friendly walk-in vendor booth. With over 60 vendors—many unique to this site—the Aurora market also offers Thursday family activities like face painting and glassblowing demonstrations.
Both locations feature traditional German-inspired food, warm beverages, and unique gifts, creating a delightful holiday experience for all ages.
The Christkindlmarket is known for its annual souvenir collection, featuring limited-edition mugs, a ceramic beer stein, a hand-crafted ornament, and gift boxes. These collectibles will be available at the Christkindlmarket locations in Chicago and Aurora starting November 22, while supplies last.
2024 Collection Highlights:
Boot Mug: Making its return since 2019, the iconic black boot-shaped mug with a red interior is back by popular demand. Decorated with festive market scenes, it can be purchased empty for $9 or filled with hot beverages at various vendor booths.
Nutcracker Mug: This mug, designed to look like the holiday favorite Nutcracker, complements the boot mug and features the same red-and-black color scheme. It ties into the Nutcracker-themed scavenger hunt at Christkindlmarket Aurora. Available for $9 (empty) or filled with non-alcoholic beverages. Watch out for a naming contest on Christkindlmarket's Instagram, with opportunities to win a free mug!
Beer Stein: The 2024 ceramic stein, adorned with a Nutcracker marching band, blends holiday tradition with charm. It’s available for $20 and can be filled with imported German beer from Bitburger, Köstritzer, and Weihenstephaner for guests 21 and older.
Glass-Blown Ornament: The fourth annual Christkindlmarket ornament, hand-painted and glass-blown in Europe, is shaped like the boot mug and features intricate holiday details. It’s priced at $43.99 plus tax.
Gift Boxes: Perfect for corporate gifts or those unable to visit the market, the 2024 Christkindlmarket Gift Boxes include two boot mugs, German treats, and vendor goodies. Starting at $109, these boxes can be purchased on-site or online.
“We’re excited to bring back the fan-favorite boot mug alongside new designs like the Nutcracker mug and our stunning ornament,” said Maren Biester Priebe, CEO and General Manager of German American Events, LLC. “These items truly capture the festive spirit of the market.”
