Small town spotlight: Geneva’s small town charm with modern vibes

Geneva, a town about 40 miles west of Chicago, offers a unique vibe beyond typical small-town expectations. It is known for its rich history, lively cultural events, and stunning natural beauty.

The town was initially inhabited by the Pottawatomi. Geneva’s location along the Fox River made it a hub for trade and agriculture. The town’s growth was further spurred by the construction of a new Chicago and North Western Railway depot in 1892. In response, the Geneva Improvement Association, founded in 1887, launched efforts to beautify the area, plant trees, maintain lawns, and preserve the Third Street business district to attract residents and visitors.

In 1922, Kate Raftery opened The Little Traveler, the first store in the historic Third Street district, which was initially run from her home. It showcased unique items she collected during her travels. Raftery encouraged friends to open their own shops, establishing iconic businesses which continue to thrive today, like the Mill Race Inn.

Much of the historic Third Street corridor remains intact and offers a unique experience. Several businesses are housed in well-preserved Victorian homes repurposed into shops and eateries. These buildings, many recognized landmarks, offer house tours throughout the year. Maps and more information are available at the Geneva History Museum.

The museum educates the public about Geneva’s history through unique exhibits, rare artifacts, and engaging programs. It also offers brochures, maps of historic landmarks, and a schedule of community events.
