Foxtrot and Dom’s Kitchen & Market abruptly ceased all operations Tuesday, shuttering dozens of storefronts around Chicago. The closures come just months after a sprawling merger of the two high end convenience grocery chains.

According to a joint statement from Dom’s and Foxtrot, the mass closure has affected 33 Foxtrot locations and 2 Dom’s locations spread throughout Chicago, Austin, Dallas, and Washington DC.

Foxtrot previously operated 16 locations throughout Chicago, with storefronts in Old Town, Lincoln Park, River North, Fulton Market, and Wicker Park. Dom’s operated 2 Chicago locations, one in Lincoln Park and one in River North.

The decision shocked customers who were met with a flier at each location this morning, stating the permanent closure of Foxtrot and Dom’s. Management at Dom's Lincoln Park location refused to elaborate on the reason for the closure, according to Block Club Chicago.

Customers and former employees of the chains took to social media to voice their frustrations about the sudden closures. “Foxtrot notified employees this morning, including the managers of the locations”, wrote former Foxtrot employee Ashley Ver Beek on Instagram. “The doors were locked and shifts ended at 10 a.m., even though folks had come in to open at 6 a.m.”

Foxtrot made its Chicago debut in 2016 while Dom’s opened in 2021, according to Eater. Both chains became popular with locals for their gourmet food options, ready-made meals, convenient snacks, coffee bars, and comfortable lounging areas. The two companies merged in November of 2023.

Outfox Hospitality, parent company of the two grocery chains, is reportedly filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, according to Eater.

Foxtrot and Dom's apologized for the abrupt decision in their shared statement. "We explored many avenues to continue the business but found no viable option despite good faith and exhaustive efforts.”

“This decision has not been made lightly, and we understand the impact it will have on you, our loyal customers, as well as our dedicated team members”, read the joint statement. “We understand that this news may come as a shock, and we apologize for any inconvenience it may cause. We genuinely appreciate your understanding during this challenging time.”
